About Iain Gill
I have been working with computer technology from childhood, when I received my first ever computer, the Commodore Vic 20. It was on this computer that I began programming. My first program was a simple text-adventure which ran to 5000 lines of CommodoreBASIC code.
Ever since then, I have spent the majority of my free time learning the ins and outs of many computer systems. My first job involved programming in Sculptor 4GL, in which my greatest achievement was a program that allowed the scanning of pallet barcodes for despatch and returns via a dumb-terminal hooked into an AIX server.
After being made redundant from my position a few years later, I found that Sculptor 4GL was not in common use, and hence no vacancies could be found in this area.
At this time, I decided to return to college to learn more about the IBM PC, which had just arrived on the scene. I was taught the Pascal and COBOL languages, which proved to be too little, too late.
From then, I have taken it upon myself to learn skills that may be useful in the future. Finally, in 1998 I discovered the World-Wide-Web, and instantly recognised the potential for this medium. I played with HTML and related-technologies for many years after that, and eventually learnt ASP (Active Server Pages).
I wrote a few dynamic websites using ASP, but eventually began to realise that not only was ASP incredibly slow for application development, it wasn't as secure as I had hoped. It was at this point that I switched my programming language of choice to PHP, which whilst being Open-Source, provided much better support for web-application development.
I have now written several bespoke dynamic websites, the majority of which use my specially-built website administration panel. This panel is still in use today and its functionality is increasing daily.
Besides software development, I also have a thorough knowledge of PC hardware, and have built many PC's for both myself, friends and business.
I was also previously employed as an Developer/IT Support/Administrator in which I was responsible for the selection, purchase, and installation of all hardware and software requirements (including Windows Server using Active Directory). I eventually resigned from my post in order to concentrate on my own business.
Iain Gill, 2008.
